Camping has been a time-honored tradition of many a man who sought to challenge their mettle against the forces of nature. And it is in that spirit that people go out camping even today. No sir, for New Yorkers there are many campsites that have been mapped out around the city where one can conquer the obstacles of the wild like the cavemen of old, without electricity, your cell phone or the in-laws. So, let’s begin our countdown to the best camping spots around New York City.
- Cherry Plain State Park
The Cherry Plain State Park is proof that sometimes less is more. The park has around 20 camping spots that have been divided equally for tents and trailers. Here campers get to enjoy the seclusion of the Rensselaer County campground, along with the sandy beach of the Black River Pond, hiking and horseback riding. The many options available here make the Cherry Plain State Park one of the best campgrounds in the state.
- Saranac Lake Islands
Saranac Lake Islands is a sailor’s dream campground. Make your way to the shores of an Adirondack Island and camp under the stars. The Saranac Lake is home to nearly hundreds of small islands, which are scattered throughout the famous lake in Franklin County. Campers at any one of the 87 camping sites at the Saranac Lake can enjoy some great outdoors activities, such as kayaking and canoeing up and down the scenic lake. The lake also happens to be a great spot for boaters and paddlers. The Saranac Lake breaks up into smaller lakes called, Lake Flower, Lake Oseetah, and Kiwassa Lake through a series of locks which offers much exploration and adventure to the campers.

- Cranberry Lake Campground
You can really get away from it all at this very secluded part of the state. At the Cranberry Lake Campground you won’t have to bother about any tourists poking their noses in your tent. Here you will find a piece of nature that has been undiluted and the isolation is totally worth it. The location we’re referring to is the northwest part of Adirondack Park, which is the ideal spot for hiking, rowing and pretty much any non-motorized form of recreation.
- Watkins Glen State Park
If you’re looking for one of the most scenic spots in the New York State then Watkins Glen is probably your best choice. The park is home to some of the most impressive waterfalls and gorges you will find near New York and the hike along the Finger Lakes make for quite an unforgettable excursion. Along with taking in all the scenic beauty of Watkins Glen State Park, you can also enjoy other activities such as wine tasting, a car racing track and boating.
- Grand Island KOA
The highlight of this campground is that the Niagara Falls is just a short drive away. This camping ground is near Buffalo and you can easily find banana bikes and rend boats from the campground. Campers also get to take part in other activities which include, live entertainment and pancake breakfasts along with other fun activities for the whole family.
